Is Your Switchboard Ready for Solar? What QLD Homeowners Need to Know Before They Install.

So you've decided to go solar — or you're at least seriously thinking about it. You've compared a few quotes, you know roughly what size system you want, and you're ready to get moving.
Then someone mentions your switchboard might need upgrading first, and suddenly there's a cost you weren't expecting.
Here's what's actually going on — and why it's not as daunting as it sounds.
What Does the Switchboard Have to Do With Solar?
Your switchboard is the control centre for every circuit in your home. It manages all the power coming in, and with solar, it also needs to handle power flowing back out to the grid.
Older switchboards were built when electricity only ever came one direction — in from the street. Solar changes that equation. Your inverter is now pushing energy back through the system, and your board needs to be able to manage that safely and legally.
Beyond that, a solar install requires dedicated circuit breakers and isolators to be fitted to your board. If there's no room — or if the existing setup doesn't meet current standards — it needs to be sorted before the panels go up.
How Do You Know If Yours Needs an Upgrade?
The honest answer is that you won't always know just by looking at it. But there are some clear signs worth being aware of.
If your home is more than 20 years old, there's a reasonable chance the board won't meet current requirements. If it's still running on ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers and safety switches, that's a strong indicator. Same goes if breakers trip regularly when you run multiple appliances at once, or if you've never had the board looked at since moving in.
Queensland has its own specific electrical safety regulations on top of national standards, and the Electrical Safety Office is clear that safety switches are required on all circuits in modern setups. Older boards often don't have them across the board — which means any electrical work, including solar, triggers the requirement to bring things up to standard.
Does Every Solar Install Require a Switchboard Upgrade?
Not always. Newer homes with modern boards and spare capacity may be fine as-is. The solar system still needs its own isolators and circuit breakers added, but if there's room and the board is compliant, it can often be accommodated without a full replacement.
The issue is that a lot of homes in SEQ — particularly those built in the 80s and 90s — are sitting on boards that are either full, outdated, or both. In those cases, the upgrade isn't optional. It's a requirement before the install can be signed off and grid-connected through Energex.
What Does an Upgrade Actually Involve?
It's more straightforward than most people expect. An electrician replaces the old board with a new compliant one, rewires all the existing circuits into it, and fits proper safety switches throughout. Everything that was there before still works — it's just housed in a setup that meets current standards and has the capacity for what you're adding.
For a basic upgrade, costs in Queensland typically start around $800–$1,900. More complex jobs involving additional cabling or a full replacement can run to $2,000–$4,000. It's worth factoring this into your solar budget upfront rather than getting caught off guard partway through the process.
Why This Actually Works in Your Favour
Here's the thing most people don't initially realise — getting your board upgraded before solar isn't just a box-ticking exercise. It's a genuine safety improvement for your home, and it sets you up properly for whatever comes next.
If you're planning to add a battery down the track, or an EV charger, or just want your home's electrical system to actually be in good shape — a modern switchboard makes all of that easier. It's one of those jobs that's always worth doing, and pairing it with a solar install is often the most sensible time to get it done.
What We Do
Before we quote on any solar install, we assess your current setup — board included. If an upgrade is needed, we'll tell you upfront, explain why, and give you a clear price before anything gets started.
No surprises partway through. Exactly how it should be done.
Get in touch with us today to enquire about your switchboard, whether you're preparing for a solar installation, or you just want to keep your home a safe environment for you and your family.
